An online petition is gaining momentum to award a national honor for the four West Webster firefighters injured or killed during an ambush on Christmas Eve. The White House petition requests Medals of Freedom be awarded to Mike Chiapperini, Tomasz Kaczowka, Joe Hofstetter and Ted Scardino. Chiapperini and Kaczowka were killed when a gunman opened fire as they rushed to put out a fire on Lake Rd. in Webster last week. The petition needs 25,000 signatures by January 27th to be considered by the Obama administration. A link to the petition can be found here. [MyDriveFM.com]
Snapchat isn't secure: anyone can save your pics and videos
Argue though its executives might, Snapchat is good for two things: sending photos and videos of yourself making stupid faces, and sending photos and videos of yourself naked. The latter, of course, is the more compelling function since that is exactly what the app was designed for. When users send pictures or videos, the recipient can only view them for a set amount of time before they “self-destruct.” Yes, a recipient can take a screenshot but the sender is automatically alerted when that occurs — then, as the saying goes, fool me once… As it turns out, however, Snapchat users (and users of “Poke,” Facebook’s Snapchat ripoff) can easily save photos and full-length videos received through the service without the sender ever knowing. As recently relayed by BuzzFeed’s Katie Notopoulos, saving photos and videos from Snapchat or Poke is as easy as connecting a phone to a computer and opening a file browser. [Boy Genius Report]
Why you shouldn't buy a TV in 2013
At January’s Consumer Electronics Show, the annual industry orgy in Las Vegas, manufacturers are going to introduce about a zillion new television sets. They’ll come armed with a bevy of specs: Full HD 3-D. 4K. OLED. Wi-Fi. Moth Eye. (Yes, Moth Eye.) The sets will be Internet-ready. They’ll harbor more ports than the eastern seaboard and come bristling with apps to let you watch Hulu and YouTube and Major League Baseball. None of them are going to make your TV-viewing experience any better. Is it any wonder the television industry is moribund? Global shipments fell in 2012 and are expected to be flat in 2013. That’s because the manufacturers are solving all the wrong problems. They’re fixated on pixels when the mere act of finding the show you want to watch has become frustrating and loathsome. [Wired]
