Paula Creamer & the Center for Youth Services
            


ESL and the Center for Youth Services are teaming up with one of America's top female golfers, Paula Creamer, to "Tee Up Against Homelessness."  Creamer will appear at an event, sponsored by ESL, on June 16th at the Rochester Museum & Science Center, to help bring awareness to the issues of homelessness and neglect, and the connection that these challenges have with youth truancy, violence and gangs.  Julie had the opportunity to speak with Elaine Spaull, the executive director for the Center for Youth Services, to talk about the event. Michael Palotti
Michael, from Livonia, goes above and beyond in all he does.  As a husband, he supported his wife Kristy's choice to quit her job and return to school for a new degree; as a father he adopted Kristy's daughter without hesitation and loves her unconditionally; as a special education teacher he helps children learn by thinking outside of the box; and as a coach he helped his varsity track and field team win Boys Team Title.  This summer, Michael plans to pursue his dream to hike the Appalachian Trail.

Brooke Testa
Brooke Testa, a fifth-grader at West Ridge Elementary School, won the First Niagara Financial Group Inc. essay contest with a piece she wrote about opening a year-round sports facility for people with disabilities as a way to help her community.  Her essay, one of 400 submitted for the contest, was one of four picked as winners across the upstate region.  Her prize was a $250 personal savings account, $1,000 for her school to buy computer equipment and an all-expenses-paid trip to New York, where she got to help ring the bell to open the Nasdaq stock market on April 14th.

Jennifer Brush













Jennifer and her husband, Tim, lost their first baby, Taylor, at the age of 6 and a half months to various birth defects.  Taylor spent her whole life in the NICU at the Children's Hospital at Strong.  Jennifer and Tim, along with family and friends, have raised over $100,000 for the Children's Hospital since Taylor's death on January 24th, 2000.  They had a contract to raise $50,000 to have a plaque put in the isolation room that Taylor stayed in.  That amount was supassed, and Jennifer just keeps on going, so that Taylor's legacy will live on to help other children.  Jennifer and Tim have been blessed with two healthy children since Taylor's death, but Taylor still lives on in the hearts of those who's lives she touched, thanks to Jennifer's Drive, and everyone who supports her and "Team Taylor."

Linda Fullerton
Linda, from Rochester,  is highly driven by her life experiences to help people who are very ill apply successfully for Social Security Disability benefits.  She has helped people who are on the brink of being homeless or committing suicide by helping them to ge ttheir benefits without the assistance of an attorney.  She started an MSA Group for Social Security Disability benefits.  She is driven to help people with no thought of a payback, as all of her help is voluntary and free of charge. 

Emily Rodenhouse
Emily is from Palmyra, (and soon she'll be Emily Enright-she's getting married in August!) and a full-time student at Finger Lakes Community College, as well as a member of the FLCC track and field team, where she just became a national champion.  She is also a full-time employee at Tim Horton's, while managing to keep at 3.5GPA.

Karl Thomas
















Karl Thomas is in a number of bands, including Tinted Images and Big Eyed Phish, a Dave Matthews tribute band.  He also plays drums on Sundays at Henrietta Church of the Firstborn.  In addition, he is currently attending Monroe Community College, pursuing a degree in music.  To learn more about Karl's band, Big Eyed Phish, click here.


Hannah Thompson















Hanna Thompson, a Rochester native and Ohio State grad, has qualified for the US Olympic Fencing Team.  She will be leaving for Beijing on July 31st.  She's currently training in Asia.

Emily Wright














Emily, from Fairport, is a kayaking superstar, and she's currently training for the big time. She won the US Marathon National Championships last year, and this year she hopes to qualify to for the Olympics.

Kind Kids
The Kindergarten class at Klem South Elementary in Webster have been studying hard, but not just learning about colors and the alphabet. They've been working on teaching people how to be kind to others - and they even made a video about it! How cute - you can check out the video, called "How to Be Kind," here, or watch it below.
