It always amazes me when very intelligent people make very dumb decisions. The latest is a complete shocker as General David Patraeus resigned this past wknd. as the result of an affair he had with a woman who wrote his biography, ironically titled All In. Gen. Patraeus is a true American hero, the four-star General who designed the surge strategy in Iraq and saved us their. After successfully implementing that amazing recovery, he went on to Afghanistan and led our fight there before taking over as Director of the CIA. He obviously is a vastly superior leader and a genius, but somehow let down his guard and was caught in an extramarital affair that is unexplainable. Apparently there is a huge volume of emails and other correspondance that led to the General's downfall. How anyone has time to send 1000s of emails during war and important CIA duties is beyond me but to not realize all this recorded correspondance can come back to haunt you is baffling, especially IF classified data was involved. Another General John Allen who leads the Afghan effort now has been implicated in another emailing relationship. Reports indicate around 30,000 emails are involved. Again, who has the time nowdays for such a high volume of emailing? That seems to be on the level of a 12-year-old texting his buddies nonstop. However and wherever this concludes is to be determined. One thing is clear, these men were brilliant in their military careers but apparently have failed on more personal levels. Their fine service to our country should be noted and appreciated and also the fact is undeniable that no one is perfect, war hero or not.
Speaking of, I had the honor of being the Master of Ceremonies this past Sat. at the Walter Klein American Legion Post Veterans Day dinner in Warsaw. It was great to be in a room with true heroes, so many who have given so much to our country. Their service is appreciated and I tip my cap to all in Warsaw under the leadership of Cmdr. Dan Walczak. God bless our troops!
